The COVID-19 pandemic poses unprecedented challenges to modern medicine. The presence of previously diagnosed cardiovascular diseases, especially in the elderly, is due to a particularly poor prognosis in patients with COVID-19.
In order to prevent the spread of coronavirus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Health Fund has allowed for extensive provision of online consultations in specialised cardiac care. This decision of the public payer, undoubtedly forced by an unforeseen health problem, is the best evidence of the growing importance of telemedicine solutions in the modern healthcare system. Experts from the IT and Telemedicine Committee of the Board of Directors of the Polish Cardiac Society, including the AMULET Project Manager - dr hab. med. Pawel Krzesinski, strongly recommended the use of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, setting out their position in a communication dated as early as 13/03/2020. (see).
In the face of such unexpected challenges to the healthcare system, telemedicine should be expected to develop rapidly, enabling the implementation of new models of care for cardiac patients. The AMULET project fits perfectly into the strategy of adapting the healthcare system to the current epidemiological situation, as pointed out by the authors of the article published in the journal Paediatrics and Family Medicine, “Cardiac patients and COVID-19 – what a family doctor should know” by dr. med. Robert Ryczek and dr hab. med. Paweł Krzesiński.
